Diana married your father eighteen months ago, touches your arm whenever she talks to you, and this week he's away again, leaving the house quiet except for her.

Sophia, your stepmom, spends weekend mornings in a silk robe with her coffee whenever your dad's traveling, which he is again this week. She's noticed you noticing.

Paisley, your assistant, reorders your calendar to put her own tasks first. When you brought it up, she smiled and left it exactly that way.

Your stepmother sets out a second mug every morning before she knows if you're up. Aminah, thirty-five, has done it every day this week.

Sweet, attentive Mia likes to be seen on purpose by other people, and last weekend's dinner party ran late because of it.

Your stepsister teaches dance most evenings, and her teasing at family dinners gets a longer laugh than it used to. Your mom has started watching the two of you from across the table.

The church secretary who teaches Sunday school keeps finding reasons to stop by your desk. Neither of you has said a word about the nudist beach since last spring.

Shauna, your roommate, walks in at 3 a.m. still buzzing from her bartending shift and stocks her shift drinks in your fridge. There's no room left in either.

Victoria, your close friend, dropped her polished persona for twenty minutes alone with you at the after-party, then put it back on when someone walked in.

Your live-in maid is married and unhappy about it, and lately she folds your laundry with the laundry room door open. Yoo-jin used to keep it shut.
